Visitors urged to stay safe during Open Farm Weekend

As hundreds of families and school children prepare to take part in the Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend (12-14 June) HSENI is reminding visitors that farms can be busy and dangerous workplaces.

Gemma Mooney, HSENI Principal Agri-Food Inspector, said everyone had a role to play in keeping themselves safe.

“Farm Open Weekend is a wonderful opportunity for families to connect with farming and gain a greater understanding of the vital role our farmers play in producing food and caring for the countryside. 

“However, it is really important to remember that farms are not theme parks but busy working environments and can be dangerous places. And while host farmers are working hard to make their premises safe for the open weekend, visitors must follow safety advice and remain vigilant,” she added.

Organised by the Ulster Farmers’ Union, participating farms across Northern Ireland will open their gates to welcome visitors for a behind-the-scenes look at life on a working farm. 

"For many children, a visit to a farm is an exciting adventure and an opportunity to learn about farming first-hand. By taking a few simple precautions and remaining aware of their surroundings, visitors can help ensure the experience is both enjoyable and safe,” Gemma continued.

"We want everyone attending Farm Open Weekend to return home with happy memories. So we would encourage parents and guardians to always keep children under close supervision, follow the guidance provided by event organisers and farm staff, and stay within designated visitor areas,” she added.

Visitors are advised to:

Follow all safety signs and instructions from farm staff;

• Keep children under constant supervision;

• Stay away from machinery, vehicles and equipment;

• Avoid entering restricted areas;

• Take care around livestock and do not attempt to feed or handle animals unless invited to do so;

• Wash hands thoroughly after touching animals and before eating or drinking, and

• Wear suitable footwear and clothing for farm conditions.
