Following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), a company director of a gas heating company has been fined at Belfast Magistrates Court in connection with the installation of gas boilers at five residential properties across Northern Ireland.
Nathan Jermy, the sole director of Belfast Boiler Services Limited, pleaded guilty to two offences covering the five properties and was today (1 August 2023) fined a total of £1000 in connection with gas work carried out by the Belfast-based company which is no longer trading.
Speaking after the hearing, Kiara Blackburn, an Inspector with HSENI’s Major Investigation Team, said “It is vital that all gas work is carried out in such a way so that it does not present a danger to any person.
“The Gas Safe Register plays an important role in ensuring gas safety. All gas businesses and engineers must be on the register to carry out gas work legally.
“Homeowners and occupants can check if a gas engineer is currently Gas Safe Registered by visiting www.gassaferegister.co.uk”
The HSENI investigation established that gas work, involving the installation of gas boilers at each of the properties, was either not carried out in a safe manner or not completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. As a director, Nathan Jermy was fined for failing to prevent the health and safety failings that led to the prosecution.
As part of the investigation, any defects to the gas installations were clearly identified to ensure the safety of homeowners and tenants. In two cases, gas leaks were identified resulting in the gas installations being classified as immediately dangerous.
