HSENI has produced its new Corporate Plan for the 2023-2028 period

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has produced its new draft Corporate Plan for the 2023-2028 period.
The Corporate Plan (CP) was approved in October 2022 by the then Minister for the Economy. The CP set sets out the key areas of work that HSENI will focus on up to 2028.
It has been developed by our staff and also through public consultation which has helped us form a collective vision for all dutyholders in Northern Ireland.

It has been endorsed by the HSENI Board. HSENI will continue to work collaboratively with partners, industry, trade unions and other regulators, to promote proportionate risk management and drive down accidents and occurrences of occupational ill health.
In the CP, HSENI’s stated mission is ‘Working with others to help dutyholders reduce the rates of work-related serious injury and ill health in Northern Ireland.’ Strategically, HSENI will focus on preventing the most serious workplace health and safety issues in high risk industries and activities.
In this CP we propose measures which show a commitment to a continued reduction of accidents and ill-health and which reflect the collective nature of the effort required. Our measures will track trends rather than set targets for reductions.
The measures are:
- the average number of serious and fatal accidents over the Corporate Plan will be lower than the average number in the previous Corporate Plan (32)
- the average number of major accidents over the Corporate Plan will be lower than the average number in the previous Corporate Plan (249)
- the average number of over three day accidents over the Corporate Plan will be lower than the average number in the previous Corporate Plan (1790)
The CP again focuses on a sector based approach and specifies the challenges and priorities in each key industry.
HSENI will continue to focus on occupational health issues. There are a number of ill health conditions which may result in premature death or have significant life limiting consequences which are directly linked to workplace exposure including occupational cancers (including asbestos related conditions), serious respiratory conditions (including COPD and occupational asthmas), and infections which may result in death or long-term disability (e.g. Legionella, Hepatitis etc.)
