Topics: Workplace Health

Introduction:

Workplace Health encompasses the social, mental and physical well-being of workers.

Successful workplace health practices requires the collaboration and participation of both employers and workers in health and safety programmes, and involves the consideration of issues relating to stress, manual handling, musculoskeletal, ergonomics, allergies etc.

The HSENI Workplace Health group which formed in April 2009 brings together a range of experienced professionals from the fields of stress management, physiotherapy, health promotion and traditional inspection, delivering expert advice and guidance on how to maintain the balance between health and wellbeing in a workplace setting.

Key Issues:

  • Health Promotion

Workplace Health Promotion’s strategic focus is to shift health promotion away from the problem-oriented individual interventions within the workplace, towards a more holistic socio-ecological model, by encouraging a salutogenic rationale amongst employers which highlights the recognition that health is largely ‘produced’ outside of a health service setting. This approach to health promotion not only recognises the context in which work influences both health and the achievement of the core goals of the workplace, but also contends that health improvement requires investment in the social systems in which people spend their working lives.

Within Health Promotions, we seek opportunities to promote with employers, that tangible investment within the workplace, in health and wellbeing at a local level, becomes an asset for and an outcome of the development, effective functionality, and productivity of the workplace. We will work in partnership with employers to highlight the economic, social, occupational, and moral arguments that contribute to tangible outcomes both for the employer and employee through the benefits of a holistic approach to health and wellbeing within the workplace.
