Consultation description

This consultation document seeks comments on HSENI’s proposals for establishing Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) for the substances listed in the Directive, in order to implement it in Northern Ireland. WELs are set to help employers meet their legal responsibilities under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 (as amended) which require employers to prevent, or if this is not reasonably practicable, to adequately control, their employees’ exposure to hazardous substances.

IOELVs are European legal limits that are set to protect workers in the European Union from the ill-effects of hazardous substances in the workplace. Their legal status derives from Council Directive 98/24/EC on the protection of the health and safety of workers from the risks related to chemical agents at work (the Chemical Agents Directive). HSENI proposes to implement the 4th list of IOELVs by approving the amendments made to the legally binding Great Britain Health and Safety Executive publication: EH40/2005 Workplace Exposure Limits. This document is available on the HSENI website (https://www.hseni.gov.uk/publications/eh402005-workplace-exposure-limits).

The closing date for receipt of comments is no later than noon on Friday 11 May 2018.
